Igoni Barrett’s Book Launched in Abuja

Igoni Barrett was in Abuja at the weekend for the launch of his new book 'Love Is Power or Something Like That,' a collection of short stories.

The event, which held at Salamander Cafe, Wuse 2, was attended by the literati of Abuja including Cassava Republic duo Jeremy Weate and Bibi Bakare-Yusuf.

The author read passages from the eponymous story and other stories in the collection and thereafter responded to questions from the audience. Chief Operations Officer of Farafina and author of 'Fine Boys,' Eghosa Imasuen, moderated the proceedings.

Since publication, the book has garnered international acclaim. In a piece for Publisher’s Weekly, O’Henry award winner, Carolyn Cooke, named 'Love is Power' along with collections by Franz Kafka, James Baldwin, Alice Munro, and James Joyce as one of “The 10 Best Short Story Collections”.

Also, Nadine Goldimer, the 1991 Nobel laureate for Literature, wrote in a blurb: “A. Igoni Barrett is a writer who has succeeded in making colloquial literature without seeking spurious attention by vulgar daring. Here is a reader’s entry to hearing on the page how contemporary communication, not only in his Nigeria, can be inventive.”

The collection was first published in the United States by Graywolf Press and in the United Kingdom by Chatto and Windus. It was published in Nigeria by Farafina.
