Metro Bakery Opens in Abuja

Last weekend, Metro Bakery opened in Lugbe, Abuja, bringing smiles to the faces of the patrons who had the first taste of its products.

Located in F.H.A Lugbe, the bakery contains endless shelves of freshly baked goods like bread and savoury pastries of all colours and sizes which sit on racks or display cases.

Metro Bakery was founded by Mrs. Sandra Adio, a graduate of English Language from Ambrose Alli University, Edo State and a certificate holder in entrepreneurship from Lagos Business School's Entrepreneurship Development Centre.

She currently owns a salon, but wanted to try something new and food-related.

“It wasn’t like I grew up loving to bake or anything like that,” she said. “Before now I couldn’t do anything with flour, but I wanted to do something related to flour.”

However, she was acquainted with the wonderful world of ovens and pans from a young age.

“My late father was a baker before so I grew up in a bakery,” she said. “I knew so much about bread but I did not show interest in it then.”

In her quest to get practical skills about baking, Mrs. Adio earned a certificate in pastries at the International Center for Culinary Arts, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and returned full of baking knowledge and countless recipes. In addition, she learned a few extra tips from Youtube videos.

Prior to opening of the bakery, her friends who tried out her pastries always came back for seconds, and from baking from home at first, Metro Bakery was born.

The bakery offers all kinds of bread ranging from wheat bread to fruit bread, wedding cakes to party cakes, caramel cupcakes and different types of biscuits, all at affordable prices. A cupcake is N150, while the prices of other cakes depend on their size and design.

Some customers expressed their delight about the opening of Metro Bakery.

“The bakery is right near my house so I can come here and buy cakes,” Miss Gift Edokpa, who lives in Lugbe, said.

“Their staff are really nice. I’ve tried their cake and it’s wonderful,” Mr. Kodjo Obumah, another customer said.

Mrs. Adio’s goal is to provide a one-of-a-kind bakery that offers something no one else around is offering.

“In Nigeria you have a lot of people do the same thing,"she said. "So I want to do something different from what everyone is doing."

One of her tactics is to use good quality ingredients and serve fresh goods. Soon, she hopes to expand the bakery to include ice cream and popcorn.

Her advice to budding bakers: “Get training. If possible, work in a bakery because it will help you. And then, do your research, see what other people are doing and don’t be afraid.”
